Sheet Offcuts vs. Nested Pricing: How to Stop Losing Money on Custom Laser Cuts

Pricing material by the square millimetre you use hides the offcut you pay for. Learn when to bill nested area, when to bill the whole sheet, and how to absorb the waste on purpose.

You buy material by the sheet, but most quotes charge for it by the part. The difference is the offcut: the awkward leftover strips and corners that never become anything. Price every job on the nested area alone and you quietly pay for that waste out of your own margin, job after job.

The hidden cost of scrap accumulation

A single offcut costs very little, which is why nobody notices. But a workshop that cuts forty small jobs a month from a few sheet types ends up with bins of leftovers. Some get reused on later jobs. Many never do, because the colour is unusual, the piece is the wrong shape, or you cannot find it when you need it. Every unused offcut is material you paid for and did not bill.

The honest question for each job is not “how much material is in this part?” but “how much material did this job use up?”

When to price by nested area

Billing only the area your parts occupy (plus a sensible allowance for gaps between them) works when the leftover has a good chance of being used:

  • Common materials you cut every week, such as 3 mm plywood or clear acrylic.
  • Jobs that are a large share of a sheet, so little is left over anyway.
  • Standard colours you keep in stock and reach for often.

When to bill the full sheet

Bill the whole supplier sheet, as dedicated stock, when the leftover is unlikely to earn its keep:

  • A colour or finish bought specially for one customer.
  • Expensive or hard-to-reorder materials where you will not keep the remainder.
  • Small orders where the parts use a small part of a sheet you had to buy whole.
  • Repeat customers who always order the same stock, where you hold the sheet for them.

In Laser Quote, switch a layer to Bill Full Sheet (Dedicated Stock), enter the price of the whole sheet as the raw material cost, pick the sheet size and enter the area your job uses. The layer shows the offcut as a percentage and a dollar amount so you can see exactly how much waste the price absorbs.

Standard sheet sizes

Sizes vary by supplier and country, so always check your own price list. Common ones include:

  • 300 × 600 mm and 600 × 900 mm: small hobby and craft sheets, often laser-grade plywood and acrylic.
  • 1200 × 600 mm: a half-width sheet that is easier to store and handle.
  • 1200 × 2400 mm (or about 1220 × 2440 mm in imperial markets): full commercial sheets.

Plywood also has a grain direction. If a part needs to bend or be strongest along a particular direction, that limits how you can rotate it when nesting, and raises the waste. Check with your supplier which way the face grain runs on the sheets you buy.

Keep the waste visible, not buried

The worst option is the one most shops use by default: ignoring offcuts and hoping the margin covers them. Whether you choose nested or full-sheet billing, make it a decision. Tracking the offcut per job shows which materials cost you the most in waste, so you can change the sheet size you buy, group jobs onto the same sheet, or charge a little more for one-off colours.
